Types of Bipolar Disorder
Contrary to popular belief, bipolar disorder is not a single diagnosis. There are a number of different types of bipolar disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). They include:
- Bipolar I disorder. The most common type of bipolar disorder, this version is characterized by manic or mixed episodes that last at least a week, or by manic episodes that require hospitalization. Depressive episodes are typical and may last two weeks.
- Bipolar II disorder. If you are diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, you generally experience no manic or mixed episodes at all but instead shift between depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.
- Bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (BP-NOS). BP-NOS is the diagnosis when you experience significant mood swing issues that are outside of the normal range of your personality but do not meet the criteria for bipolar I disorder or bipolar II disorder.
- Cyclothymic disorder (or cyclothymia). The mildest form of bipolar disorder, cyclothymia is defined by a shift between mild depression and hypomania that lasts for two years or more without meeting the criteria for other forms of bipolar disorder.
