Three researchers at UC Davis near West Sacramento, CA are studying schizophrenia, one of the most mythologized and misunderstood mental health diagnoses. These three researchers were each awarded grants from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation to study different aspects of the illness. The goal of the research is to develop a better understanding of schizophrenia which will hopefully lead to better treatment and, perhaps someday, a cure.
Schizophrenia is an illness of the brain that causes hallucinations or delusions. Those who suffer from the illness may also hear voices that others don’t hear and experience extreme paranoia. Individuals with this disorder are often at a high risk for suicide. Psychosocial treatment, or “talk therapy,” is commonly used to help individuals learn to cope with their illness and live more balanced lives. Some effective treatments for schizophrenia include:
- Family therapy. Counseling that involves not just the individual and the mental health professional but the family as well. The family can learn together about how to cope with the individual’s condition.
- Rehabilitation. Patients learn vocational and social skills. The training helps the individual learn how to better function in society.
- Cognitive behavior therapy. Patients learn how to manage their symptoms by focusing on the behaviors and thought patterns that are holding them back or disrupting their lives.
- Integrated treatment. If substance abuse is co-occurring with another disorder, the patient can receive treatment for both disorders.
