In Pocatello

When Major Michael Stayner retired from the Pocatello, ID police department last year after 40 years of service, his reputation as an advocate for mental health issues was well known. In January of 2011, he received recognition from the Idaho State Planning Council on Mental Health (ISPCMA) for his work to promote awareness, education, and understanding in the area of mental health.

Stayner served on several mental health boards and councils, including having been member of ISPCMA since 2005. During his service to the city of Pocatello, he prioritized mental health training and especially emphasized critical incident team training for local law enforcement. His diligence resulted in numerous Pocatello police officers and dispatchers being trained to properly and effectively identify and assist citizens with mental illness.
