Common Mental Health Problems

Anxiety is not always pathological or maladaptive: it is a common emotion along with fear, anger, sadness, and happiness, and it has a very important function in relation to survival. There is a common misconception that panic attacks can be self-treated. With proper guidance it can be calmed through individual or group therapy. Anxiety is considered to be a regular reaction to stress. When anxiety becomes extreme, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder.

Depression: being: “… depressed, sad, hopeless, or ‘down in the dumps”. Both clinical and non-clinical depression can also refer to more than one feeling. Such a combination can include anger, fear, anxiety, despair, guilt, apathy, or grief. This also includes post-partum depression. If left untreated it can lead into other physical health disorders.

Addiction is when you have difficulty controlling how much you use or how long you use. For example, one drink leads to more drinks, or one line of cocaine leads to more.

There are different levels and types of addictions. At one end of the spectrum is the non-functioning addict. There is a social stigma about addictions such as: those who could not function at their jobs. There are gambling addictions, food addictions and many other mental health disorders.

At the other end of the spectrum is the functioning addict. You don’t have to suffer major losses to have an addiction. It’s never easy to quit. But if you’ve already suffered negative consequences and don’t want them to get worse, there’s never a better time to quit than now.
