Symptoms of Common Mental Health Issues

Manic depression symptoms (as found in manic-depressive disorder or bipolar disorder) involve symptom sets that are the opposite of each other. One involves a “high” set and the other a “low” set. These symptoms are found in a continuous range from mild to moderate to extreme. Moderate to high symptoms can range increased energy, activity, and restlessness. It can take one from excessively ‘high,’ overly good, euphoric mood to distractibility, or can’t concentrate well. The list goes onto racing thoughts, talking very fast or extreme irritability. Abuse of drugs, particularly cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications is a risk.The low or depressed state can be lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness can plague a person. Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or sleeping too much can be a sign of manic depression. The risk of this type is when thoughts of death or suicide attempts when battling this disorder.

PTSD, otherwise known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more terrifying events in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. It is a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to an extreme trauma. It can be caused from wars, childhood abuse, 9/11 or any number of life’s traumatic events either personal or global.

For bipolar disorder, genetic factors contribute substantially to the likelihood of developing bipolar disorder, and environmental factors are also implicated. Bipolar disorder is often treated with medications, and sometimes other psychiatric drugs. Psychotherapy also has a role, often when there has been some recovery of stability. In serious cases in which there is a risk of harm to oneself; these cases generally involve severe manic episodes with dangerous behavior or depressive episodes with suicidal ideation.
