In Altoona

Every year, people from in and around central Pennsylvania gather near Altoona, PA for a candlelight vigil. The event, now in its 11th year, is held to highlight those who suffer from mental health disorders and raise awareness about mental health issues. A number of people will speak about their own personal experiences with mental health disorders and their journey towards recovery. The organizers hope that individuals who attend who have not yet sought help with their own issues will be encouraged by these stories to seek help.

Therapeutic Intervention for Mental Health Disorders

For many individuals, the realization that they may have a mental health disorder can be frightening. Treatment is almost always necessary to mitigate symptoms. Telling someone else about your struggles and taking steps towards assistance can help. Various types of therapy are available to help these individuals make a move towards better mental health and well-being:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Focusing on the individual’s thought patterns, the counselor works with the person to alter some behaviors and perspectives and aids them in establishing new ones.
  • Psychoanalytic therapy. Sometimes called “talk therapy,” individuals talk to a counselor about their life, immediate issues, and goals for the future.
  • Group therapy. Helps alleviate feelings of isolation as individuals with similar issues meet on a regular basis with a mental health professional in a group setting and provide each other with support.
