Murfreesboro, Tennessee Mental Health Treatment Centers

Murfreesboro is Tennessee’s fastest growing major city and one of the fastest growing in the US. Its population grew about 50% from 1990 to 2000, and currently sits at about 101,753. Although Murfreesboro is sometimes considered a suburb of Nashville, it is far enough away and has a large enough population to maintain an identity separate from its larger neighbor. The city is also home to Middle Tennessee State University, the largest undergrad school in Tennessee, with over 20,000 students. In 2006, Murfreesboro was ranked by Money magazine as the 84th best city (population over 50,000) to live in the country. (See related: Nashville Mental Health Rehab).

Murfreesboro Mental Health Concerns

Residents of this rapidly growing city can be as likely as any other to suffer from mental health issues. These can take varied forms, including depression, addiction, anxiety, or others.

Types of Mental Health Issues

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event resulting in psychological trauma. This event may involve the threat to one’s own or someone else’s life or physical or sexual safety, overwhelming the individual’s ability to cope. Post traumatic stress disorder symptoms can include re-experiencing the original trauma(s) through flashbacks or nightmares.

Another mental health issue is anxiety. It can be a serious disorder requiring treatment. It is characterized by feelings of apprehension, worry or fear but with no actual observed threat.

Addiction is a disease, and people suffering from addiction go through periods of relapse and remission. Addiction is characterized by impairment in behavioral control, craving, inability to consistently abstain, and diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships. Treatment is necessary, as well as involvement in recovery activities.
